Incorrect predictions, not incorrect statistics!

چکیده
Page 1 of 1 (page number not for citation purposes) In a recent study on nurses’ ability to predict volume status after subarachnoid haemorrhage, we found very low predictive values [1]. In a letter to the editor, Dane [2] argued that an error in statistics ‘makes any reasonable conclusions impossible’. Because Dr Dane was the statistical reviewer of our manuscript, both the authors and the editors were aware of Dane’s comments on this issue well before publication.

Conserving Battery Energy through Making Fewer Incorrect File Predictions
Recent increases in CPU performance have outpaced increases in hard drive performance. As a result, disk operations have become more expensive in terms of CPU cycles spent waiting for disk operations to complete. File prediction can mitigate this problem by prefetching files into cache before they are accessed. However, incorrect prediction is to a certain degree both unavoidable and costly. Ba...
متن کاملCounterexamples in Probability and Statistics
Introduction A counterexample is an example or result that is counter to intuition or commonly held beliefs. It can be a powerful way of disproving an incorrect statement or conjecture. In this paper some incorrect beliefs commonly held by secondary school students in probability and statistics are presented. Simple counterexamples that disprove these beliefs are provided and discussed in detai...
متن کاملDoes Associative Memory Play a Role in Solving Physics Problems?
Previous research has found that people frequently provide incorrect predictions about the path of moving objects when given an idealised physics problem to solve. The aim of this research was to explore whether these incorrect predictions are due to the application of an incorrect naïve physics theory, whether incorrect perceptions generated from past experiences lead to misconceptions of how ...
متن کاملConfusion Matrix
A confusion matrix (Kohavi and Provost, 1998) contains information about actual and predicted classifications done by a classification system. Performance of such systems is commonly evaluated using the data in the matrix. The following table shows the confusion matrix for a two class classifier. The entries in the confusion matrix have the following meaning in the context of our study: ● a is ...
متن کاملUsing program and user information to improve file prediction performance
Correct prediction of file accesses can improve system performance by mitigating the relative speed difference between CPU and disks. This paper discusses Program-based Last Successor (PLS) and presents Programand Userbased Last Successor (PULS), file prediction algorithms that utilize information about the program and user that access the files. Our simulation results show that PLS makes 21% f...
